The area around the start point of the second colour is rather messy on my work, I opt to start both the finger & thumb section on the inside of the glove; see Pic. 2

Left Mitten: 1st stitch of fingers section in 6th stitch to marker
thumb section start from 5th stitch to marker

While the pattern instructed to start the Fingers part on the 6th stitch from the marker (for both mittens) - which I did for one mitten - I started from the 6th to marker for the other mitten.

Did the same thing for the Thumb part; I start in the stitch just beside the first stitch of Fingers, 5th stitch from marker for Right mitten, 5th stitch to marker for Left mitten.

I'd picked up the side of the "Finger" part while working on "Thumb" so there's not an obvious hole between them. Demo
