I Asked AI to Write a Crochet Pattern
After chatting with GPT for a while, I asked it to perform the one thing — the very reason the mister had been “selling” me on AI: pattern designing.
At the start, I was pretty reluctant. Having done work that involves reviewing, I personally find it easier to build from scratch through trial and error than to vet someone else’s work.
Having to physically make and frog only worsens the whole process.
But I decided to try it anyway.
My prompt was:
design a crochet pattern for a lunar new year spring-y vibes floral coaster
Right off the bat, I knew I will not get a coaster.
It started with single crochets, and only had 4 rounds with 4-ply yarn???
But I still tested it but with heavier yarn and a bigger hook. No surprise when I end up with a 5.5cm "piece of work"
The pattern was followed exactly as generated, without modifying stitch counts, round structure, or construction method.
Testing was conducted using 5-ply yarn and a 3.25 mm hook, while keeping all pattern instructions unchanged.

After I showed it the result, it attempted to expand the piece by adding a single round of half double crochet.
The projected final size was stated to be over 9 cm, while the actual size at this point was approximately 5.5 cm.

The additional round was insufficient and did not resolve the issue.
At this point, I questioned why I started the test in the first place.
It later recognised that a sufficient base circumference was required before decorative elements could be added.
It still began the pattern with single crochets and, after adding new rounds, did not make corresponding adjustments to the subsequent rounds.

After changing the starting round to double crochets, the piece went out of control and no longer resembled a circle. I gave up.
So, how did I get the coaster in the first photo?
That was done by Gemini.
Using the same prompt, it also returned a similar pattern. With the experience I had with GPT, I immediately asked for a redo. I only mentioned that what it suggested would not result in a coaster-sized piece. And in the second return, it started with double crochets and adjusted the related stitches in the subsequent rounds.
There was some minor confusion in a later round, which was easy enough to iron out.
It even offered a visual of what the end project would look like (it looked nothing like the written pattern).
It’s obviously not giving Lunar New Year or spring vibes - but I kinda like it.
I'm considering testing it again with thinner yarn, and possibly using gradient colours instead of contrasting ones.
Would you be interested in this pattern?
