Crochet Hobby & Huat the Horses
Took a few weeks to R&D and test the pattern over a few yarn and hook sizes. And also the Lunar New Year accessories for next year’s zodiac.
This project started without a fixed end in mind. I knew I wanted a small horse - sturdy, compact, and clean in shape - but the rest unfolded slowly through testing, reworking, and a lot of small decisions that only show themselves once the piece is actually in your hands.
I tested Hobby in different yarns and hook sizes to make sure the construction held up, not just visually, but structurally. Some versions looked closer to real horses, some were softer and more playful, and some revealed very clearly what worked (and what didn’t) when it came to stitch definition and shaping. Those variations made their way into the pattern photos as a quiet reminder that yarn choice really does change the feel of a finished piece.
The body construction was one of the parts I spent the most time refining; especially attaching the legs worked together, shaping the head cleanly, and keeping joins neat from every angle. Wherever a written explanation alone felt insufficient, I added photos or linked techniques, but I was careful to keep the pattern itself fully readable on its own.
Some parts needed a bit more intention than others. The mane, forelock, and tail are glued in place, not to take shortcuts, but to achieve a specific shape and finish that stitching alone couldn’t quite give. There’s a small “behind the scenes” section in the pattern showing some of these moments — the quiet, unglamorous parts of design that still matter.
Along the way, the idea for Lunar New Year accessories naturally emerged. Coins, a prosperity bag, and a small orange came together as a separate pattern - Huat the Horse - rather than being folded into Hobby itself. Keeping them separate felt clearer, both creatively and practically, while still allowing Hobby to stand on its own as a timeless base.
By the time everything came together; pattern layout, photos, technique index, and final samples, I was honestly exhausted. But it was the good kind of tired. The kind that comes from seeing something through carefully, without rushing it.
I hope Hobby the Horse brings the same satisfaction to your hook as it did to mine while designing it.
Enjoy~
