Crochet Prosperity Bag
I had been wanting to try my hands on irregular shapes, and a Chinese character felt like the perfect challenge. So when I came across this Prosperity Bag design, the timing couldn’t have been more apt.

On first watch, I honestly had no idea where the designer was going with it. I’m not one to follow blindly, so I approached it my usual way - rewatching the tutorial multiple times and writing the pattern down in a format that made sense to me. I named each stitch and section along the way, just so I knew exactly what I was doing and why.
It was a refreshing lesson in construction, and I have to say, the result was astonishing. Seeing that character take shape from a single string of yarn was so satisfying.
The original pattern called for standard round balls at the ends of the drawstring, but I wanted to "emph up" the theme of fortune. I decided to borrow the Chinese Cash Coins from my recent Huat the Horse pattern instead.
They turned out super cute! There’s something about the gold coins that reminds me of the traditional hat worn by Cai Shen Ye (the God of Wealth), which fits this bag perfectly.
Despite the initial complexity of the character, the pattern itself is actually quite quick and easy. I’m incredibly happy with how this "bag of fortune" turned out, it’s a great mix of a new technical challenge and a personalized finish.
