Crochet Peony
For a long time, whenever I saw pictures of densely ruffled peonies on lotion bottles, I assumed they were just a variation of the Tree Peony (牡丹). I recently realized the fluffy, pompom style I actually prefer is the Herbaceous Peony (芍药).
That realization shaped how I approached this specific build.
Since this piece is being mounted in the Petal by Petal frame composition, it needs a completely flat back to lay flush against the board. I skipped the traditional bulky 3D receptacle. The flower itself is worked continuously from the center outwards, which saves the hassle of wiring and assembling dozens of individual petals.
The layers are built in this order from the center outwards:- Stamens: A small fringed center.
- Center Petaloids: The tight, ruffled core.
- Inner Petals: The main volume of the flower.
- Guard Petals: The wide outer bowl.
- Sepals: Leaf-like flaps worked directly onto the back of the guard petals to finish the flat base.
The petals are done in Tunisian crochet to get that specific cupped texture. I
ran an AI search to make sure I had the exact Tunisian terminology nailed down
for the written steps so the pattern is as clear as possible.

stuff lightly and close up.
Designed as a flat-based applique, this flower can be converted into a stalked version. Insert a floral stem with a bent tip at Round 10 and work a final round of decreases to taper the base.
