Crochet Kalmia

The Mountain Laurel (山月桂) immediately stood out to me for its unusual geometry. Unlike most flowers where the petals take centre stage, this one seemed defined by its ridged exterior and almost engineered appearance. The shallow cup, pentagonal form and ten tension pockets beneath the bloom gave it a structure that felt more architectural than floral.

Rather than translating an existing design, I worked backwards from the flower's morphology and experimented through several attempts to see how much of that identity could be preserved within just a few rounds of crochet.

Because the flower itself is naturally small, keeping the proportions believable became part of the challenge. The final bloom measures approximately 3.8 × 1.8 cm. The ten dual-coloured stamens proved particularly tricky at this scale, needing to remain slim enough to avoid overpowering the flower while still contributing to its distinctive structure.

Instead of flattening the underside completely, the bloom narrows into a wrapped pedicel so the ridged cup and suspended form could remain part of the presentation.

As this piece was made for Petal by Petal and needed to work within the frame, I chose to present only a single stalk. I may explore creating a fuller branch or bush interpretation in the future.
