Crochet Hanging Bag Organizer Insert
Inspo: How to Crochet: Multi-Pocket Crochet Tote Organizer (Right Handed) - Tamara Kelly - Moogly
I wanted the insert to have a body and not get all wobbly & curling in the bag. To attain a bit of thickness, I decided to alternate regular single crochets & long single crochets. However, I was also afraid that might make it too heavy hence I chose to use Raffia. I’d used this yarn previously for the Le Pliage Mini and it was a delight to work with than the normal raffia we know. I also used a larger hook so it’d hopefully work up faster with lesser rows.

I have MANY recyclable tote bags which is what I carry nowadays.
I measured each of them coz, why not? I just want to make ONE that will fit ALL of them.
So, I got the above.
I decided to go for around 18cm for the width, and
make adjustable straps.
I do not want the insert to pop back out when
my bag is fuller at the bottom so I settled for 24cm for its length.
Pattern
I started from the MIDDLE piece, followed by the FRONT pockets. Finish off, reconnect back to the bottom of MIDDLE and work up the BACK piece. I then continue on to the STRAPs for the buttons.
Middle
| Round | Stitches | Count |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | CH 2, 33 FSC | 33 |
| 2-42 | *SC, LSC* × 8, SC, *SC, LSC* × 8 | 33 |
Work currently measures 20.5 cm across; 16.5 cm tall.
Continue on to POCKETS without cutting yarn.
Pockets

45 |
| 5-40 | *SC, LSC* × 11, SC, *SC, LSC* × 11 | 45 |
My last row measures about 26 cm.
The middle stitch for both pieces are deliberately left as SC so stitching
them later will be easier.
Cut yarn and finish off.
Back
| Round | Stitches | Count |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | In unworked loops of MIDDLE R42 16 SC, skip 1, 16 SC |
32 |
| 2-60 | *SC, LSC* × 16 | 32 |
This is slightly narrower than the MIDDLE piece at 18.5 × 22.5 cm
Each piece is wider than the one behind so there’re pocket spaces.
STRAP for Buttons + Last row
- CH 30, work back in 9th CH from hook
- *3 SC, CH 3, skip 3* × 2 Ensure buttons can go through holes made.
- 9 SC down the rest of the chain, skip the last CH and continue onto R60
- SS till 2nd last stitch
- CH 30, work back in 9th CH from hook
- *3 SC, CH 3, skip 3* × 2
- 9 SC down the rest of the chain, leave the last CH and SS to last stitch of R60
Finish off.
Scallop Edge
This is totally optional. I decided to add them last minute as I think it’d be better if the middle partition is higher than the front pockets. I’m glad I did, they added a nice flair.
- Attach to the first stitch of MIDDLE
- *Skip 1, (5 HDC), skip 1, SS* × 8
Assemble
- Weave in all tails & steam or block before stitching every together.
- Start from dividing the pockets by SS-ing the middle stitch of MIDDLE & POCKETS together.
- As the 3 pieces came up to quite a bit of thickness, I used needling to stitch them together instead of crocheting along the sides.
- Attach the buttons..
